Longtail keyword marketing tips

By lmtrainer

Getting found in the search engines is the goal of your website. The key is finding out how to get the right keywords so when you develop content around them you will get indexed and listed in the search engines. This article will share with you how I am able to quickly find and analyze keywords in my market and decide if I want to create content around that phrase.

Each day there are an estimated 220,000,000 searches done on google. Over 50% of them are brand new each day. But we need a base of phrases to build our content around so we can captue the attention of our visitors. So how do we find what people are searching for, especially around the long tail of the market?

You will see a search bar at wordtracker. Type in your main keyword phrase you are interested in. Then hit the search bar. Wordtrakcer will bring back 50 results. Look for 3-7 word phrases that you are interested in.

This gave me the phrase: “how to get the right keywords”

It showed me that there where roughly 10 searches a day for this phrase, which by the way is a long tail phrase.
Next I go back to google and type in “free google keyword tool” This brings up another free tool developed by google.

By using the free google keyword tool I will be able to confirm that there is indeed traffic around this term which allows me to move onto the next part of discovering how to find the right keywords.

Next I go to Google.com and take my keyword and search for it. What I found is that there is 24 million plus competing phrases for this keyword. With that many pages, many people will get discouraged and say they will never be able to compete. But this is NOT your competition.

We are just getting warmed up…

With the Google search still open and your phrase in the search bar, place quotes around your entire phrase. It will look like this: how to get the right keywords. By doing this you are telling google to show you how many pages have that exact phrase. You will find a much different number in the resluts. How to get the right keywords went from 24 million without quotes to 24, 000. This is my real competition..

This is a big difference between 24 million to 24,000.

There is one more step I take when looking for great longtail phrases.

Next we will look at those 24,000 pages and see who really knows how to seo their site. To do this we will use all in title function to better determine our competition.
To do this in the google search bar will will type in:

Use allintitle: (colon) and then your keyword phrase.

When you do this it is going to tell you how many people have correctly optimized their site. In my example, I only found 60 competing websites. Now we are talking.

Anything under 1000 competing all in title pages alerts me that I should be able to build some content around my phrase and properly optimize it and get it ranked very quickly in the search engines.

When you target your longtail market in such a way, you improve your chances of not only getting your content ranked in the search engines, but you are inviting a very targeted person who is searching for an answer. Now you just need to provide the solution.
Longtail marketing is where you want to be. This article has step by step explained how to get the right keywords everytime. Manually this takes a few minutes, but as you have seen, you do not need any fancy or expesive research tool to do this. All the tools we discussed are free to you.
